Iowa Attorney General Tours Waverly Health Center
On April 4, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird paid a visit to the Waverly Health Center (WHC), engaging with local law enforcement officials and representatives from the Bremer County Attorney’s Office. Although the tour was private and closed to media, a press availability session followed, attended exclusively by the Waverly Newspapers. Here, Bird emphasized her commitment to protecting Iowans and the significance of her office's initiatives.
Doubling Prosecutors to Combat Crime
Since taking her post on January 2, 2023, Bird has been actively working to bolster public safety across Iowa. "I want to protect Iowans. Since taking office, we have doubled the number of prosecutors in our office to assist every county," she stated. Bird’s focus on a statewide cold-case unit highlights her intent to tackle the over 400 unsolved homicides in the state, ensuring that justice is pursued relentlessly for victims and their families.
Support for Sexual Assault Victims
During her visit, Bird lauded WHC for its dedicated staff of six specially trained sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE). These professionals provide vital support for victims of sexual violence. Bird acknowledged the crucial role of SANEs in guiding victims through sensitive situations, saying, "It shows a commitment to the community and to victims and survivors. We want every hospital to have nurses that are trained." She emphasized her office's dedication to enhancing victim assistance programs that fund and support SANE training.
Addressing Healthcare and Law Enforcement Safety
Another focus of Bird's visit was ongoing discussions about hospital security, particularly the rising incidents of violence against healthcare workers. "No one should be assaulted for doing their job," she insisted. Bird reaffirmed her commitment to supporting local law enforcement as partners in maintaining safety in healthcare settings.
A Stronger Community Sentinel
Bird's visit to the Waverly Health Center showcases her proactive approach to public safety and healthcare support, reflecting an ongoing commitment to fostering security and assistance for all Iowans dealing with crime and health crises. The participation of local law enforcement stakeholders underscores the collaborative efforts needed to tackle these significant issues effectively.
